Something Missing from Porn

One of the experts I consult sent me an article, in which he highlighted one paragraph:

Pornography-induced climax does indeed stimulate the release of dopamine, the neurotransmitter released through intake of addictive substances which also induces the “subsequent craving for a repetition of the high.” Unlike a human sexual encounter, however, pornography-induced climax does not release endorphins, the chemicals that transmit feelings of satisfaction and contentment.  The organic cycle of sexual expression is thus thwarted by pornography.

I think is is really a very interesting twist: pornography addiction offers the addict a non-endorphin high, unlike alcohol and opiates.  Marijuana also does not play with endorphin receptors in the brain, but rather the anandamide system, which has a similar effect.

However, it seems that endorphins are less of a player in behavioral addictions such as gambling and sex/porn.  This leaves the addict 'chasing' a satisfaction that cannot be attained.

The movie review article above used this article to get much of its information:

Based on this article alone, I would say that pornography addiction is, in the words of Dr. Al Rossi, the 'top of the 'pyramid of addiction.'  It lacks the physical dependency and subsequent physical destruction associated with substance abuse, yet robs the user of a sense of satisfaction.  It also plays into some of the most powerful elements of the human mind: sexual attraction.

  1. This is very interesting as it perfectly matches my belief that sexuality without love, the spiritual element, is not real sexuality, but an artificial product.
